Career Paths
This describes the levels that exist on the engineering team. We were inspired by the public engineering career paths published by Rent the Runway, Kickstarter, Glossier, Capgemini, and Artsy. We are happy to share our work with the broader tech community in the hopes that it may be useful to others.
Performance evaluation at DoSomething focus on the what and the how. The what is defined as what you achieve that contributes to your own professional goals, your team’s goals, and ultimately DoSomething's goals. The how is defined as how you act and how those actions contribute to DoSomething's culture and values.
It takes time, hard work, and commitment to move along a track, and engineers should expect to spend the time it takes, years in some cases, at each level. It's also important to note that that individual contributors do not need to become tech leads or go down the management track in order to increase compensation or responsibilities. There's much room for growth in either track and at each level. Additionally, our track is flexible in that one can move along the individual contributor track and then into management and back again to be a contributor.
The diagram below illustrates the path available.
